The Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC) is undertaking a significant transformation to modernize and enhance the country’s railway transport system.

Speaking at media briefing yesterday, the ERC Finance Division Deputy CEO Tewodros Asrat emphasized the corporation’s commitment to revolutionizing railway transport in Ethiopia.

The aim is to develop an efficient and integrated transport network that benefits the nation through collaboration with various government agencies.

The ERC Business Development Division Deputy CEO Engineer Getu Gizaw highlighted the cooperation’s recent qualification certificate from the Ethiopian Construction Authority.

This certification empowers the corporation to engage in a range of consulting and construction work related to infrastructure, including roads and structures, under the modernized railway transport system.

To enhance operational efficiency, the ERC has identified eight key business projects, including the Endode Logistics Port Development Project, the Mojo Dry Port Development Project, the Mojo Multi-purpose and Integrated Truck and Container Storage Park Project, and the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway line. These and other projects are progressing in the 2017 Ethiopian Calendar fiscal year.

Tewodros further stated that to strengthen human resources in the railway sector, the ERC is establishing a Railway Academy Institute. This program will provide training and facilitate technology transfer, ensuring a well-equipped workforce.

He noted that previously, the corporation incurred significant foreign currency costs by sending personnel abroad for training. The ERC is now focusing on developing local training centers.

Getu explained that the corporation is actively working to address outstanding issues related to the construction of the Bishoftu Railway Academy.

The ERC is also engaged in projects that connect railway tracks to ports and expand the overall railway network. A feasibility study for the Ethio-Sudan railway track has recently been completed, marking another step towards enhancing regional connectivity.

To refine its business model, the ERC is developing business projects aligned with its mission, leveraging public-private partnerships and diversifying funding sources.

Tewodros emphasized that the development of a robust logistics system will significantly enhance import-export trade and provide multi-modal transportation services, thereby driving economic and social development.

He also noted that the ERC is actively working to reduce its current debt, aiming to achieve financial stability and foster long-term growth within the corporation.
